Pink Square Anthias

Details

Pseudanthias pleurotaenia - It's almost hard to believe that the Pink Square Anthias is a real fish when you see the adult males. How is a pink fish with giant purple squares on the sides not some artist's fantasy caricature of an impossibly colored reef fish?

Even more interesting is that this species is a protogynous sequential hermaphrodite - none are born male, but the dominant yellow-orange female in a group will transition into a pink square-adorned male. It's something you have to see to believe. All of our Pink Square Anthias start out as juvenile females, but one in each group will someday likely turn into a male once they reach maturity. These do best in pairs or small harems in reef tanks of 180+ gallons.

Wild caught pink square anthias have always been considered to be difficult to keep in captivity because they usually arrive in poor condition and won't eat. Our Biota captive bred Pink Squares are healthy and already eating prepared commercial aquarium diets. Like many anthias, this species has a fast metabolism, so feeding them a varied diet multiple times a day is advised. They're currently feeding on EasyReefs DKI pellets, TDO C1 pellet, PE Calanus, Hikari mysis, and Easy Reef's Masstick.
