Chaetodon lunula - The Biota captive bred Raccoon Butterflyfish, Chaetodon lunula, is being produced at The Hawaii Pacific University - Oceanic Institute and Biota Hawaii. This is the first time Chaetodon lunula has been raised from eggs produced in captivity and offered commercially as a captive bred offering.
The Raccoon Butterflyfish is a hardy, beautiful species with a bright yellow body and a black mask. This species when wild caught may not eat when first introduced to a new aquarium, but has a great appetite after acclimation. Our captive bred specimens are even hardier, better suited to aquarium life, and are raised on small pellets and other inexpensive aquarium foods; making them an excellent choice for beginner aquarists. They’ve also been known to enjoy eating pest Aiptasia anemones in aquariums, making them a valuable worker fish.
This medium-sized species reaches a max size of less than 8” in aquariums. As adults, they do best in a large fish-only aquarium with other peaceful species.
