Stonogobiops yasha, The Yasha Goby is one of the most striking and sought-after nano reef fish available, known for its crisp white body, bold red striping, and tall, elegant dorsal fin. This species naturally inhabits sandy reef flats where it forms a fascinating symbiotic relationship with pistol shrimp, sharing a burrow and communicating through constant tactile contact.
These Yasha Gobies are bred by Proaquatix and offered through The Biota Group, providing a hardier, aquarium-adapted alternative to wild collected specimens. Having been raised in captivity, they are well adjusted to aquarium life and readily accept a variety of prepared foods, including small pellets and frozen offerings. This makes them significantly easier to care for compared to their wild counterparts, which can be more delicate during acclimation.
In the home aquarium, the Yasha Goby does best in a well-established reef with a sandy substrate and plenty of rock structure for burrow placement. They can be kept singly or as a bonded pair, and they are completely reef safe, posing no threat to corals or invertebrates. When paired with a compatible pistol shrimp, their natural behavior becomes a captivating display, adding both visual interest and unique ecological interaction to the tank.
Yasha Gobies can be sexed when they reach adulthood/maturity. Females have solid clear-yellow pelvic fins, and males have black tips on the pelvic fins. At this young age, we're not able to guarantee the sex. Young Gobies have a more subdued coloration that will turn into the contrasting bright red and white as adults.
