Swiftia exserta - The Biota Palau Red Swiftia Sea Fan has long, knobby red branches with white polyps. Large colonies are impressive with their hypnotic movements and many fuzzy branches. This species makes a great addition to reef tanks or seahorse tanks. Though this species isn't common in the wild, it's popular in the aquarium trade because of its amazing color. These specimens are cultured at Biota Palau and not taken from the wild reefs.
This species is nonphotosynthetic and difficult to keep in captivity, but is considered to be one of the easier to keep NPS Gorgonians. Be sure to place this coral in a shady area with moderate laminar flow to avoid algae growth on the coral. It is necessary to feed several times a day with microfoods designed for soft corals along with a wide variety of coral foods and phytoplankton. You can use a dosing pump to frequently provide meals for best results. Maintain stable water parameters, especially iodine and trace elements to keep this coral healthy.
