Black Cardinalfish

Apogonichthyoides melas - The Black Cardinalfish is a striking species with deep mocha to nearly black coloration, rounded fins, and a distinctive dark eyespot near the base of the second dorsal fin. Its coloration can vary from rich brown to almost black depending on mood and lighting, giving it a unique presence in the aquarium.

Native to the Western Pacific, Black Cardinalfish are typically found in shallow, sheltered coastal habitats, where they take refuge beneath jetties, among branching corals, and in rocky crevices. In the aquarium, they appreciate caves, overhangs, and other shaded areas where they can retreat during the day. They are generally peaceful with other fish and can be kept individually or in groups when provided with appropriate space and structure.

They readily accept prepared foods and are raised on these prepared foods in aquariums, making them an excellent choice for aquarists looking for a hardy captive bred alternative to sensitive wild collected fish. Providing a varied diet helps support their growth, coloration, and overall health. They are most active around dusk and after dark, although captive individuals readily learn to accept food during the day.

One of the most fascinating things about the Black Cardinalfish is its reproductive behavior. This species is a paternal mouthbrooder, with the male carrying the developing eggs in his mouth until they hatch.

With a peaceful environment, suitable habitat, and consistent nutrition, these cardinalfish can make a fascinating and unusual addition to a mature reef aquarium.
